CHAPTER ELEVEN

Eliza took a deep breath as Evan went to tell his family that they needed to leave. The security company had already sent police to the Castle and she and Evan needed to meet them there. On the drive across town, Eliza called Michael.

“That doesn’t make sense,” Michael said. “Shep and I swung by earlier and everything was fine.”

“Mikey, you’re on speakerphone,” Eliza said with a wince.

“Why did you go to the Castle this morning?” Evan asked.

“Shit. Sorry, Ellie.”

“Way to cover,” Eliza muttered.

Evan glanced at her. “What’s going on, Elle?”

“Hey, I’ll meet you guys at the Castle,” Michael said, in a hurry to hang up.

“Would you believe that I have no idea what he was talking about?” Eliza asked hopefully.

“Spit it out, King.”

Eliza sighed. “It’s supposed to be a surprise. I had your Christmas present delivered to the Castle yesterday and Michael and Shep picked it up for me today so it would be at the house when we got home.”

“You already gave me my Christmas presents this morning,” Evan said.

“Most of them.” She smiled guiltily. “I like spoiling you.”

“Why’d you have to have it delivered to the Castle? I wouldn’t have opened a package with your name on it,” Evan said, sounding hurt.

“It’s a little bigger than a package.” She couldn’t help but joke, “Almost as big as your package.”

“Don’t try to be cute about this,” Evan said, smiling. “You’re not off the hook for spoiling me.”

Eliza scoffed. “You spoil me all the time, sweetheart.”

“You bought me something so big that it couldn’t be delivered to our house,” he retorted. “That’s more than I’ve ever spoiled you.”

“I see you’re already forgetting about last night,” she teased, squeezing his thigh. “You don’t even know what the present is, Ev. At least wait until you see it to be annoyed at me.”

“I’ll accept those terms.” His smile faded as they pulled up in front of the Castle. A police car was waiting for them at the gate. “I’m hoping it’s a naked portrait of you to hang in our living room.”

“Oh god.” Eliza laughed. “That would definitely get Michael out of the house.”

“Just an added bonus.” Evan waved to the police officers and punched in the gate code. The metal iron screeched as it slowly opened. “You should talk to your parents about getting a new gate out here.”

“With how easily everyone has been able to break into this place, I’m thinking the gate might be worthless.” Eliza studied the house carefully for any signs of a break-in. She didn’t see any broken windows and the front door was shut. “They must’ve gone around back.”

When Evan opened his door, they were hit by the sound of the alarm blaring inside the Castle. “At least the alarm works,” Evan said dryly. “Elle, stay in the car.”

“What?”

“Just stay here and wait for Michael.” He gave her a firm look. “There is no way I am letting you go into that house until I know it’s safe.”

“What makes you think I’ll be safe out here alone?” she challenged him.
